Abstract

Papua has sacred customs and culture as well as other magical objects. The Dani tribe or Hubula tribe is a tribal group living in the Baliem Valley in the Central Mountains of Papua. The Dani settlement is located between Ersberg and Grasberg Hills in Jayawijaya Regency and some part of Puncak Jaya Regency. Balim is known as the Grand Valley or Sanggri-La. The Balim war tradition gives rise to a myth or folklore regarding the depiction of events as something whole from a circle of spirit. Traditional values in Dani tribal warfare are also shown based on tempo, situation, rhythm, place, and time. Research conducted in "War Traditions of Dani Tribe (The Spirit of War, the Spirit of Balim Economic Development)” book by Jemius Assolokobal is about household war as a material object. The formal object of this analysis is the Balim mythology which produces cultural phenomena and elements using semiotic approach. This study determines cultural elements from analyzing the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth. The theory used is Roland Barthes' semiology, denotation is the first level of signification system, while connotation is the second level, and myth is the last. The results of this research are the revelation of the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory as well as the revelation of cultural elements from the political system, religious system, and economic system.
